5 Tips for Instant Migraine Relief
Migraines are one of those things that can ruin your whole day, heck even your whole life! It is really challenging to make any sort of plans knowing that you aren’t sure how you’ll be feeling on that particular day and if you’ll be able to uphold those plans! When it comes to migraines it seems like everyone has their own unique way of getting rid of them. What is challenging is that something that works really well for one person doesn’t work at all for the next person. Frustration is the best way to describe how this makes you feel when you try everything but nothing works for you. I would like to give you 5 tips for instant migraine relief! Welllll it might not be instant relief from a migraine but they may be of considerable help in the long run!
1. Face Mask
Luckily I’m not talking about the type of COVID face mask. I’m sure you have heard of this before but they make some really nice gel face masks. Keep this in your fridge or freezer and when you start to feel a migraine coming on lay down and put this on. What it will do is cool your face but more importantly calm/cool down the nerves that may be causing your migraine to begin with. Cold has been shown to have a parasympathetic effect on the nervous system and in case you didn’t know this is the kind of effect we want to achieve when we have a migraine or struggle with migraine.
2. Cold Therapy
This one is similar to the one above but a lot more intense and something that will benefit you if you practice it at least once a week. Taking ice baths or cold showers has been shown to have a massive effect on our nervous system. It causes the nervous system to switch into a parasympathetic state! Migraine is a neurological issue and it is often due to the nervous system being stuck in fight or flight mode. So with this helping the nervous system go into a calming mode it helps decrease the number of migraines experienced along with the intensity. What research has shown is that exposing yourself to cold therapy for at least 12 minutes a week is what you need to receive the benefits. The more intense and frequent your migraines the more you may want to consider doing cold therapy.
3. What are you Eating?
Migraine is due to not only a dysregulated nervous system but also to inflammation throughout the body. What you are eating has a huge impact on inflammation within the body. When grocery shopping the first key thing to do is shop the perimeter of the grocery store. I recommend this because that is where the real food resides. Food that is able to sit on shelves for long periods of time has preservatives in it which can cause inflammation within the body. Foods that have shown to decrease inflammation are things like ginger, turmeric, salmon, and rosemary. Also making sure you are eating a lot of fruits and vegetables that are organic will decrease inflammation. By doing a simple google search for foods that decrease inflammation you will get a good idea as to what you might want to change your diet to!
4. Movement & Exercise
Movement and exercise can be great additions to your daily routine that will help minimize migraine. Exercise is a great way to release tension within the body, this tension could be the cause of migraines. There are people who actually find when they are having a migraine that exercising helps relieve the symptoms. This can ultimately be due to the fact that endorphins get released when we exercise as well. Endorphins are the body’s natural painkillers and they also induce positive emotions and a sense of wellbeing. Exercise can also help activate the parasympathetic nervous system afterwards as it will allow the body to rest and relax.
5. The Specific Chiropractic Center Naples
This is something that you are not able to do at home but I had to throw it in here as it has shown to be massively beneficial for those suffering with migraines. At The Specific Chiropractic Centers Naples we focus on working with the nervous system and its relationship with migraine. What we have seen is that a lot of people who struggle with migraines have a nervous system issue going on and don’t even know it. We use computerized infrared thermography to measure the nervous system and determine if there is an issue going on or not. If we see that the nervous system isn’t working properly we provide a very specific adjustment to the upper neck area which helps fix this nervous system problem. We have helped countless people help get relief and resolution to their migraines for good! The first step is to schedule a consultation to see if you’d be a good fit for care in the office. That way you’ll be able to ask us whatever questions you may have as well!
If you haven’t been able to catch on yet from reading this a lot of these things help with migraine relief because they are tied to nervous system function. Migraine is known and categorized as a neurological issue which is why my focus with this article was on things that can help improve your nervous system. As we mentioned in the beginning not all of these things work for everyone and you will have to find which one or combination of techniques works the best for you. I know that there are a bunch of other unique things people have tried or have found to work for migraine relief and if you think you have done one that most people don’t know about then shoot me a message, I’d love to hear what it is! I know there are millions of people out there that struggle with migraines and if one of these things mentioned above can give someone some relief I’m thrilled.
