Natural Remedies For Vertigo

When you think of vertigo it never sounds that bad.

Like okay, you get dizzy for a little bit then you’re good, right?

Well if you’ve ever had vertigo you know it is quite the opposite of that!

It is one of those things that can really throw off your entire day. If you have a bout of vertigo it can take you out an entire day of work because of how impactful it can be on you and the idea of it coming back that day.

One of my current clients is a delivery driver for an auto parts company. He had struggled with vertigo and when your job is driving around all day there is no way you’re going to be able to do your job that feels safe.

What is really scary with vertigo compared to some other conditions is the person who is dealing with it often has no idea when it’s going to come on.

Also a lot of people that I have taken care of with vertigo have tried certain medications without much relief. A lot of people don’t realize that there are natural remedies that they can do at home along with natural remedies done by providers that can help their vertigo. We will first go over the things that you’re able to do at home to help remedy your vertigo.

At Home Remedies For Vertigo

Have you ever heard of Epley’s Maneuver?

This is an exercise that you can get done at a physical therapy or EENT office but in my opinion it’s something that you can also do by yourself. It’s a series of head movements that you can do while laying on your back. Our ears are filled with tiny crystals called otoliths. These help our body maintain balance and equilibrium. Sometimes these crystals can get mixed up and rearranged in the proper position. Epley’s Maneuver helps reposition these crystals in our ear canals.

Another thing you can do at home that will help reorient these crystals in your ear is called the half somersault treatment. You’re going to start by kneeling on the ground and tipping your head straight up so you’re looking at the ceiling for a few seconds. You may experience a little bit of spinning when you do that. What that does is it starts to get the particles moving. Then from there you put your head completely upside down tucking your chin and placing the top of your head on the floor in front of you so you’re in a half somersault position. Turn your head to your left or right elbow depending on which ear you want to treat. In order to figure out which side to treat, you figure out which side your roll over while laying down makes you the most dizzy. So if you roll over to your right and get more dizzy than your left you need to treat your right ear.

When you’re in this position looking at your elbow you’re going to experience spinning, hold the position until the spinning stops or count to 30 then very quickly raise your head to back level keeping it turned, so your head and back are on the same level. Wait for the spinning to stop, then bring your head fully upright, still turned, then rest. Sometimes it will take 4-5 repetitions to get everything reset. It’s recommended to wait at least 15 minutes before retrying this exercise.

If you struggle with vertigo I’m sure you’ve already gone down the supplement route as well. Things like Vitamin C have been shown to help people with vertigo. Also if you haven’t had your blood tested you may have anemia, or low iron. This can cause dizziness in people so taking extra iron supplements can help people with dizziness. The exercises mentioned above are for Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo and Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to people who have BPPV. When looking at supplements it’s important to get them from a good source. Usually a normal pharmacy or a big box store doesn’t have the best options. In town here in Naples I recommend going to Nature’s Garden or Food & Thought for supplements. They have a ton of great options along with staff that will be able to help you make the best decision for yourself!

Natural Remedies For Vertigo With Accountability

You obviously know that if you have vertigo you can go to your primary care physician and a lot of times they will prescribe you some sort of medication. If you’re reading this you probably have already gone down that route or you’re trying to avoid that all together. Luckily for you there are some holistic practitioners that can help with vertigo.

Things like acupuncture have been shown to help with vertigo. By inserting small needles into certain meridians and points on the body an acupuncturist can treat your vertigo in specific. It can also help decrease a lot of pain and discomfort along with relaxing your mind and body. When it comes to acupuncture in Naples Dr. Deanna Carell is who you need to see. She is an expert in her field and is so kind to all of her patients making sure they all feel heard and get the care they deserve.

Another option is what we do here at The Specific Chiropractic Center Naples. What we find is that a lot of the people we take care of who suffer from vertigo have a nervous system issue going on. Usually this is from something going on in the upper neck or what’s called the upper cervical area. When we have a misalignment of this area it can impact what’s called the cranial nerves…or nerves of our head. Cranial nerve 8, or the Vestibulocochlear Nerve has a huge impact on our equilibrium. If this nerve isn’t able to send or receive proper signals to and from the brain we can experience vertigo.

Through functional nervous system scans and specific biomechanical x-rays we are able to determine if the bones in the upper neck are shifted out of place and are impacting the messages going to and from the brain to the nerves of the body.

If we see something is going on here we provide a very specific adjustment to help restore proper function to the nervous system and in turn people will experience a decrease and potential resolution to their vertigo.

I know vertigo is something that can have a huge impact on your everyday life. Yes medical intervention is sometimes needed but there are a lot of times where these natural remedies we talked about above can be extremely helpful to someone struggling with vertigo. If you have any questions regarding what we mentioned above or if we may be able to help you give us a call or text 239-610-1442!

When I was a kid we went on a couple vacations every year. Growing up in Wisconsin during spring break heading south was pretty standard for many families. After months of frigid cold temps and snow, the idea of traveling to warm weather was very much welcomed!

Have you ever eaten a bunch of starbursts? When I was in high school I would always get starbursts from the vending machines. I would go through the whole pack in the course of an afternoon…at the same time I would notice that my jaw would get a little sore from all the chewing I would be doing…as they can be quite hard sometimes!
